The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
